Things that influenced my product
In both 'Illmatic' and 'It was Written' by Nas, the reduced opacity of the artist makes it seem as if Nas is a part of the city in the background. Because these iconic albums are loosely based on the same subjects as my own, I also decided to reduce the opacity of the artists on my own album to have the same effect. This helps to give my artists a sense of identity and belonging as they are faded into the Broadwater Estate that we filmed in.
In my research into rap albums, I discovered that the black and white colour scheme is widely used throughout the genre. As a result of this, I also decided to utilise this colour scheme in all of my products. This helps people to identify my album as being a part of the rap genre. In addition to this, the pictures show that the colour scheme is consistent over different sub genres of rap and varying periods of time. For example, 'Tha Doggfather' by Snoop Dogg was released in 1996 and belongs to the sub genre of gangsta rap. On the other hand, 'MMMP2' by J Spades is a UK based mixtape which was released in 2013 and is of the trap genre. And finally, 'Free Crack 2' by Lil Bibby belongs to the drill sub genre of rap.
