A brief summary about what i learnt about music videos in June.

 Before we broke up for the summer, we learnt of 'generic signifiers' in music videos. A generic signifier is something in the mis en scene which makes it clear to the viewer's what the genre of the song is or what the song is about.
for example  the music video of the song 'War' by 30 seconds to mars includes many generic signifying props such as Tanks, guns, army unform, these objects are associated with war.

, we also learnt of 'obvious edits' these are things such as a filter over a video i.e black and white or even a CCTV type filter, this may be applied to a music video in order to convey an attitude or a situation. In Amy winehouses back to black video a funerhal is happening, the tragic events are portrayed through the black and white filter.

  and of course we learnt the purpose of a music video, which was to promote, sell the song in an entertaining video and also to invoke a reaction which makes the viewer remember it.
