Laura Mulvey had a quite feminist approach to the way females are negatviely portrayed in the media, especially in music videos. Mulvey used the term 'Male gaze' this refers to the fact that women are only presented in a way that pleases heterosexual men sexually.
this has been seen often recently in many music videos which have caused a controversial uproar in the media world, which has made Mulvey believe that there should be a new 'feminist freindly' approach to filming, where roles are reversed i.e the men are now seen through a 'female gaze'
some examples of 'male gazes' are often seen repeatedly by the same artists, could this put to question that this may be the only way to become popular in the male dominated' media world'?
Beyonce in the music video:partition |
beyonce in the' who run the world'video (legs open barely covered private bits!) |
miley cyrus riding a ball wildly whilst naked |
a model arched in a sexually provocative position in the blurred lines music video |
the music video 'blurred lines' not only had many sexual connotations in the lyrics which caused offense to women worldwide , but the way the female models behaved and were treated clearly showed where mulveys theory came from.
